How this works

The NBN Atlas gathers wildlife sightings from hundreds of recording schemes, societies, local record centres and apps such as iRecord and BirdTrack into one database of over 300 million records. The page asks it for everything recorded within the circle around your postcode over the last three years, keeping only records whose contributors published them under an open licence (CC0 or CC BY), and shows what was seen most, by group, and most recently. Each dataset drawn on is credited, as the Atlas asks. Cached for six hours.

Sources

  • NBN Atlas occurrence records (CC0 and CC BY records only), credited to their datasets on the page.
  • Postcodes: postcodes.io / ONS Postcode Directory (OGL v3).

Records are where people looked, not a survey: gaps mean nobody recorded there, not that nothing lives there. Sensitive species are shown at a coarser location by the Atlas.
