Traffic

How busy are the roads near you?

The Department for Transport counts traffic at tens of thousands of points on Britain's roads. See the vehicles a day on the counted roads nearest your postcode, what is driving them, and whether it is getting busier or quieter.

How this works

Every stretch of major road in Great Britain, and a sample of minor roads, has a count point where the Department for Transport records traffic, either by a manual count on a neutral weekday or estimated from nearby counts and national trends. From those it publishes an annual average daily flow, the vehicles passing on an average day in both directions, split by type. The page reads the road traffic statistics API for your local authority’s count points, picks the nearest, and fetches every year’s flow for them. Figures are updated once a year; the page caches them for a day.
