Water quality

What's in the water near you?

The Environment Agency's sampling points on the rivers, lakes, canals, estuaries and beaches around your postcode, and what the laboratory found in the past year: ammonia, phosphate, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, pH and more.

  • Latest sample results
  • A year of medians
  • Rough health bands

How this works

Environment Agency officers take samples from thousands of fixed points on England’s rivers, lakes, canals, estuaries, beaches and boreholes, most of them monthly, and the laboratory results go into the Water Quality Archive. The page lists the open points within your chosen radius and reads a year of results for nine determinands that say most about a river’s health, showing the latest value and the year’s median for each. The two archive calls are shared between neighbouring postcodes and cached for six hours. The archive covers England; Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are linked to their own agencies.
