Area scorecard

How does your council area rank?

The Office for National Statistics gathers the official figures that describe a place, from pay, jobs and business survival to house prices, school results, healthy life expectancy, emissions and broadband, into one local statistics service. This page reads forty of them for the council area around a postcode, sets each against the region, the nation and the UK, ranks the area among every council of its kind, and picks out where it does best and worst.

  • 40 official indicators
  • Ranked among every council
  • Against region, nation & UK
  • Each linked to its ONS page

How this works

The ONS Explore local statistics service publishes around a hundred indicators for every council area, region and nation, each drawn from the official producer: the ONS itself, the Departments for Education, Work and Pensions, Energy Security and Net Zero and Transport, Ofcom, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, HM Land Registry and the devolved statistics agencies. This page picks forty that describe a place and reads the latest figure for the council area, its region, its nation and the UK in one call, then every council’s figure for each indicator to find where the area ranks. Where an indicator is only published for upper-tier authorities, an English district shows its county’s figure, marked as such, and is ranked among upper-tier authorities. Indicators the ONS does not publish for the nation the postcode is in are listed rather than shown as gaps. Each indicator has its own reference period, from a monthly house price to a survey pooled over several years, and survey-based figures carry sampling error, so treat a handful of places in a ranking as noise.
