What does your area do for a living?

Every workplace in Britain reports its employees to the Business Register and Employment Survey, and every VAT or PAYE-registered business sits on the business register. This page reads both for one postcode's council area: how many people work in each industry, which sectors the area has more of than the country as a whole, which have grown or shrunk over five years, and how many businesses there are and how big they are.

  • Employee jobs by industry
  • Specialisms vs Great Britain
  • Five-year change by sector
  • Businesses by industry & size

How this works

The Business Register and Employment Survey counts employee jobs at the workplace, so the figures describe the jobs inside the council area rather than what its residents do; the self-employed and farm agriculture are outside it, and it covers Great Britain, so Northern Ireland shows businesses only. Jobs are grouped by the nineteen sections of the Standard Industrial Classification. The specialism figure is a location quotient: the sector’s share of local jobs divided by its share of all British jobs, so 2.0 means the area has twice the national concentration. UK Business Counts lists enterprises on the Inter-Departmental Business Register, registered for VAT or PAYE, by industry and by employee size band. Nomis rounds small counts, and the newest year of business counts reaches the national total before every council, so the page uses the latest year the council has in full.
